What Makes A Quality Concrete Slab?
Concrete slabs are a flat horizontal area made by pouring concrete onto the ground. They can be used as foundations, floors, or bases for many different types of structures and applications. In order for a quality slab to be produced, it all starts with how well you prepare; this is what makes the difference in a successful or failed slab.
First, we will check the type of soil that is present on the site and then figure out how thick we want our slab to be. We will also have to decide if we need to use any steel reinforcement in our slab (rebar) and determine where we would like the water to drain off after it rains. After we have figured out these factors, we will begin executing the pour. While the concrete being placed into the slab is important, there is much more to creating a quality slab than just placing the concrete. How well we prepare prior to the placement of the concrete will ultimately determine whether the slab will succeed or fail.
Concrete Slab Design:Engineered for Your Needs
Every concrete slab is engineered to meet the demands of its intended application and the site where it will be located. The factors that are considered in designing every concrete slab include:
Load requirements: Engineering a slab as a base for a hot tub would require significantly more engineering than for a shed.
Soil conditions: Slabs built over Hollywood’s sandy soils may require special site preparation to ensure they do not settle excessively.

The concrete slab is poured with a slight slope so the water flows away from your house, which is important when there are heavy rains in Florida during certain times of the year.
The space under the slab can be used as an outdoor living space, to store lawn equipment or other items, and/or used as a base for additional structures you may want to add in the future.
Concrete Slab for Garden Shed
If you have a garden shed or plan to build one, a concrete slab for the garden shed will provide the flat, solid base that most garden sheds require. We will size the slab to fit your shed, add reinforcement as necessary, and design the slab so that the water runs off rather than accumulating underneath the slab.

Our Concrete Slab Installation Process
Below is an outline of what you can expect when we complete your installation project.
- Evaluation: First, we examine site conditions such as soil type and composition, and any potential issues with water run-off (drainage) and/or any underground utility lines that could interfere with the placement of your new concrete slab.
- Excavation: Next, we will dig down to the required depth. This allows us to account for both base material and concrete thickness.
- Preparation of Base Material: Following excavation, we will prepare a stable base by installing and compacting a layer of crushed stone or gravel.
- Installation of Vapor Barrier: Depending upon the specific application, we may also be required to install a plastic sheet (vapor barrier) to prevent moisture from migrating up into the concrete slab.
- Setting Forms: After preparing the base, we will construct a perimeter “form” around the area where the slab will be poured in order to create the containment needed to achieve the desired shape and size for your slab.
- Placement of Rebar Grids/Wire Mesh/Fiber Reinforcement: Once the forms have been constructed, we will place the required amount and type of reinforcing steel (rebar grids, wire mesh, or fiber) as specified by your engineer.
- Pouring the Concrete: The next step in the process is pouring high-strength, ready-mix concrete designed specifically for the harsh Florida climate and working the mix to remove any air pockets created during the mixing and transporting processes.
- Finishing the Slab: Following the initial set of the concrete, we will screed the surface to ensure it is level, then apply the specified finish for your slab (smooth, textured, or decorative).
- Installation of Control Joints: In order to control cracking should it occur, we will either cut or form the control joints at predetermined locations on the slab.
- Curing: At this time, we will apply the recommended curing compound and protect the slab while it develops its strength.
- Sealing: Finally, depending upon the specific application, we may be required to seal the surface of your slab to provide additional protection.
