To be sure a pathway will last a long time, the construction process must be done with the highest level of quality:
- Layout and Planning: We draw on the ground where we plan to put the pathway, check the drainage of the area, and make sure we have enough room to put the pathway in the right location and shape.
- Excavation: We dig down to the correct depth (usually 6-8 inches in total) so we can put down a base under the concrete.
- Base Preparation: We put down and compact the crushed stone base (usually 4 inches deep) to provide support and help with water to drain from underneath the concrete.
- Form Setting: We build our formwork, which is how we create the edge of the pathway and hold the concrete inside the formwork.
- Reinforcement: We add wire mesh or fibers to the concrete to help prevent cracks from forming.
- Concrete Placement: We put down quality concrete that is designed for South Florida’s weather conditions.
- Finishing: We do whatever finishing we need to do based on what was specified by the client — broom texture, a stamped pattern, or an exposed aggregate.
- Control Joints: Every 4-5 feet, we cut control joints into the concrete to force any cracks into predetermined areas.
- Curing: We take care of the concrete while it develops its strength; this is particularly important in the hot sun of Florida.
- Sealing: We apply a sealer to the top layer of the concrete to protect against stains and enhance the look of the concrete.
